Hard to Swallow

croatiantimes.com

Hundreds of thousands of poisoned capsules have been dumped into China's rivers as medicine factories try to avoid a government crackdown over public health fears.

The capsules - made with industrial grade gelatin made from recycled leather - contain high levels of chromium, which can even cause cancer and organ failure.

Now factories concentrated in central China's Henan province have apparently dumped huge stocks of the capsules in local waterways to dodge the investigation which has led to 45 arrests.

"I thought there was some sort of algae on the water's surface until I looked closer and saw the whole canal was full of capsules.

"If these things can poison you when you swallow them, how are they going to affect you when they dissolve in the water system?," said Lei Yen, from Zhengzhou.

Officials have so far closed down 80 factories in the crackdown.
