Singer Thompson could face jail
Croatian Times
Popular Croatian singer Marko Perkovic Thompson could face a stint behind bars if the State Attorney's Office decides to initiate criminal proceedings against him for his involement in receiving over half a million Euros from polital party the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ).
Evidence was given recently at the corruption trial of the former ruling political party where is was alleged that Thompson received 515,000 Euros not to sing during the election campaign. HDZ are on trial for siphoning more than 70 million kuna (9,5 million Euros) from state institutions and companies.
Under current laws, any person receiving illegal payments can be sentenced to a maximum of five years imprisonment, as well as the state official who has abused his position of power. When Croatia joins the EU this law will change and the prison term will increase to 10 years, reports portal net.hr.
