Edgar Degas in Zagreb

"Dance steps in bronze", the travelling exhibition of 74 sculptures by French artist Edgar Degas, including his best known sculptural work, the famous "Little fourteen-year-old dancer" opens on 15 March in Klovicevi dvori gallery in Zagreb. The exhibition, organised through the French Institute is announced as the central happening of the Month of Francophonie which is taking place in seven Croatian cities. The sculptures, courtesy of Paris based art foundation M. T. Abraham were previously exhibited in Cyprus and were brought to the Croatian capital in special cases last week. The exhibition will display Degas' sculptures of bathing ladies, horses, portraits and one torso. Degas' "Little fourteen-year-old dancer" is a 1881 sculpture of a young dance student named Marie van Goethem. The sculpture was originally made in wax before it was cast in 1922 in bronze. It was made in wax, which was an unusual choice of material for a sculpture of that time, dressed in a cotton skirt with a hair ribbon, sitting on a wooden base. A copy of the sculpture sold for £13,257,250 at Sotheby's in 2009. The exhibition in the Croatian capital will be held until 13 May 2012, reports daily Jutarnji List.
